Religion and World Views
At Thorpe Primary School we believe that Religious Education plays an important part in developing our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural growth. As part of our RE curriculum pupils are encouraged to explore religions, engage with their knowledge, and reflect on their learning and their lives. Through the teaching of RE our children develop religious literacy (religious literacy is the knowledge of, and the ability to understand, religion, beliefs, practices, spiritual insights and secular world views. It plays an important part in preparing pupils for life in modern Britain). RE offers our children the opportunity to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions and world views represented in the United Kingdom. It develops an understanding of the influences of the beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. As well as developing factual knowledge of a variety of religions, RE promotes attitudes of respect towards other people who hold views and beliefs different from their own. We aspire to help pupils develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious issues, with reference to the principal religions and world views represented locally and in the United Kingdom.
Please read the RE Curriculum Statement of Intent document below for further information.
Right to writhdraw from Religious Education
Our curriculum is based on inclusivity and understanding of other religions and worldviews. We hope that through our Religion and Worldview lessons, pupils gain an experience and understanding which enables them to make lifelong connections to their peers and a greater understanding of their own beliefs and place in the world.
In keeping with the law, parents / carers may withdraw their children from RE provided they give written notification to the school. Parents / carers are not required to give their reasons for wanting to do so.
We ask that if you are considering withdrawing your child from RE, please arrange a meeting with your child’s class teacher, the RE lead or a member of the senior leadership team before making your decision. Pupils who are withdrawn from RE will be supervised during this time;however no extra learning or work will be provided for them.
